The problem about the modelling industry in Singapore
I have been in the modelling industry for more than a decade now and since starting my modelling business, I noticed a sharp decrease in the models' fees over the years. And suddenly model bookings are made through third parties instead of going through directly to the modelling agencies. The reason? Clients want to save all the hassles of having to cast the models themselves. Instead production houses, advertising agencies, freelance agents and producers all started to give a "special package" that includes the models' fees. I first noticed this practice about five years ago and it has increased steadily. So now these third parties call the shots. They give us a package rate and it's like take it or leave it and it gives us no chance to negotiate for higher fees most of the time. Because to them, if you could not accept the rates someone else would. That's where the threatening game comes in. Mind you most of the time these rates are pathetically low. I refused to accept it if they want my better models because it is definitely going to spoil the market. As it is the market is already so weak. Partly I would blame this trend on freelancers and this includes freelance models, agents and producers. This is because many of them don't know the actual market rates and they don't have mother agencies to handle it for them. To these freelance models, as long as they get jobs in quantities they don't really care if the fees are low. Furthermore they are paid in cash and it is a one-time off deal and they cannot claim further fees later on. So in the end it is the third parties who secured those jobs laughing all the way to the bank. They know that many freelance models are desperate for jobs and usually they work with the same models as long as the clients' job criterias fit them. I have heard from full-time models as well that these freelancers are spoiling the market. Honestly I don't see any much co-operation from all the modelling agencies. Only a handful are willing to work together as a team. Here we want to try to revive the modelling industry but as usual we have some smart-alecs who prefer to monopolize the industry and start instigating each other not to support those who are working closely together. Well in the end we want to see who will win the battle. Only time will tell. More updates coming up...
