Modelling scams
Dear Model Wannabes Modelling scam is the NO.1 turn-off for many legitimate and reputable modelling agencies. It gives the modelling industry a very bad name. Here, I'll tell you the truth very briefly behind these scams. Many a time, young people were caught unaware especially those who are dying to be in the limelight. Maybe because of being ignorant, naive and ego problem. These scam agencies hire youngsters who are looking to make fast bucks. For every deal closed, they make a percentage (or commission) out of it. These so-called talent scouters would roam around town to target their victims. Mind you, to these talent scouters, every one they approached are "suitable" to become "models". No wonder the word "model" is no longer a glamorous word it used to be decades ago. Now, any tom, dick and harry (sorry for the pun) can become or is a model. Just look around you or simply ask your friends. Almost every one is a "model". Agree? Remember these talent scouters are out to make money from you. They want you to part with your hard cold cash. Once approached, they will try to entice and convince you that you are suitable to be a "model". They'll either bring you up to their so-called modelling agency or get your particulars and start harassing you to go for an interview. Once you're in their office, they'll impress you with their model portfolio (usually fake ones) or sweet-talk you and say that you're gorgeous and very suitable to be a model, and will try all ways to make you part with your money - either by asking you to pay for a highly-priced portfolio, buy some beauty products or take up a highly-priced grooming course (even though you know your height isn't suitable for runway shows). I'm sure if you've been a victim to such scams before, these methods are all too familiar right? Usually these scam agencies' offices are very impressive with many staff all busy making "phone calls". You'll see familiar models' posters pasted all over the wall. This is how they impress you. Afterall, the first impression counts. In case you don't already know, many successful modelling agencies in the world today started out with a small office (some even started out from home) and then climbed their way up to where they are today. There is another group of talent scouters who eye only on guys. They would approach the young, good looking and muscular guys (usually between 17-25 years of age) on the pretext that they are good to be a model. These talent scouters don't aim for your money but something else (you go figure that out yourself as I don't wish to stereotype anyone here). They would give you free photoshoots and composite cards but you'll be controlled by them. You're not allowed to join another modelling agency or even make friends with the fashion people. Many a time, these photoshoots are sleazy because you'll be required to shoot topless in briefs, swimming trunks or skimpy outfits. And the next thing you know, your pictures end up in some male porno websites. By then, damages are already done to your image. From what I know, the modelling jobs they got are usually sleazy ones. And most of the time, you're not paid. Free here, free there or you're paid in kind. So the next time you're approached by anyone to do modelling, think twice. Birds of the same feathers will flock together and these groups of talent scouters usually know one another. Afterall, they are in the same scam business! Bear in mind, legitimate modelling agencies DO NOT publish any advertisement in the press. They are usually recommended by the fashion people in the modelling industry or through word of mouth. That should be the way because only good and professional modelling agencies are highly recommended. These scam modelling agencies and talent scouters would never admit what they are doing is wrong and they're very defensive when questioned. Lastly, no one is going to give you something for free. If you want to go into modelling, a portfolio and composite cards are the two important tools to get you started. You're required to pay these expenses from your own pocket. Of course some legitimate modelling agencies would pay for you in advance and then have it deducted from your modelling assignments. This usually applies to full-time models. So to all model wannabes out there, you've been warned! Always check the background of a modelling agency very thoroughly first before you part with that hard earned money of yours! Another way would be to ask around BUT be very careful because people tend to gossip and spread untrue rumours about certain modelling agencies. Some are deliberately done maybe because competition is great in this business. So use your judgement and take it with a pinch of salt. Good luck!
