History is repeating itself in Thai politics

I am touching a little bit on Thai politics because I travel there very often. I am keeping a close-watch on any updates in the political arena via The Nation's website.

I really don't understand what the Thai protesters are hoping to achieve. One problem after another and it seems like never ending and every one wants to lead the country but no one is given the chance to do so. The stage looks set for another impending coup. When is this going to end? This is definitely driving investors away and now businessmen are setting their eyes on countries like Dubai, Vietnam, Laos, China and India.

Since Samak took over as the prime minister, the oppositions have never stopped criticising his ability to bring the country forward. If you asked me, so what if he is Thaksin's shadow? Corruptions aside but Thaksin did a good job in boosting the economy and foreign investors are happy to invest in the country. I believe during his tenure as a prime minister, many of its people were having some sort of a good life. What makes the opposition so sure that if they took over the power there won't be anymore problems? It'll still go back to square one because Thaksin's supporters will surely oppose it. Then it'll never end. Who suffers in the end? The people. In my opinion, the coup was the biggest mistake in Thailand's history. Now the coup leader seems to have disappeared. His name was never heard again after he stepped down as the military chief.

In fact many of my Thai friends are already so sick and tired of this whole drama. Many are thinking of leaving the country and start life afresh somewhere. They too agreed that any new government formed is never given the chance to prove their ability. The whole stage is like a kid show. Some of the comments made by the oppositions are so childish. Give the present government more time to get things right and forget about linking them to Thaksin. As long as they can do a good job, who cares right? Do the oppositions want to see Thailand going backward instead?

I personally feel that the demonstrations will be more of a curse than anything else. It may even backfire the oppositions. One thing for sure, it'll definitely tarnish the good image of the country. Thailand is no longer the "land of smiles". People are frustrated with the political turmoil. You can see the frustration plastered in almost every citizen's face. The oppositions and its supporters should spare a thought for their fellow citizens and the monarchy. Because if these demonstrations are not going to stop, it'll be a lose-lose situations for all the opposition parties concerned. Don't forget, no matter what you'll still need the support of the present government's supporters assuming if you're able to topple them.

One good example is Philippines and Indonesia. When they toppled Marcos and Suharto, what good have the countries become? In fact it got so bad because the ones who toppled them cannot even do a good job. So the curse lingers on until today and both countries are constantly having political problems and their own people are suffering. As the saying goes, certain things are better left as it is if things are going well.

Because of this problem, I may not even want to relocate there anymore. You'll never know if your money is going to be safe in the bank. At any time it can be freezed. So doing business there is even riskier now. I doubt anyone wants to take any chances. It'll be a big headache.

Contributor's Note

This is my personal opinion and I had wanted to voice this out for a long time now. Finally I did online.
